There’s “action” once again at the former Grumman plant in Bethpage, Long Island. Once home to a team producing the Apollo lunar module, the facility is now home to a team producing films and TV – and periodically, Hollywood’s biggest stars. Two new Nassau County studios – Gold Coast Studios and Grumman Studios – might just make Bethpage, Long Island the most exciting film destination this side of Hollywood Boulevard.
Grumman Studios is a 160,000-square foot, qualified New York State production facility boasting seven stages, massive storage facilities, acres of paved outdoor space and convenient access to New York City. Columbia Pictures recently chose Grumman Studios for “Salt”, its $165 million action thriller starring Angelina Jolie.
Gold Coast Studios, Nassau County’s new state-of-the-art film studio, offers 40,000 square feet of production space with New York State-approved soundstages and production-ready facilities including makeup rooms and break areas. Summit Entertainment recently filmed the upcoming “Man on a Ledge”, starring Elizabeth Banks and Sam Worthington, at Gold Coast Studios.
Parviz Farahzad of Grumman Studios gives much of the credit to the Nassau County IDA: “Without their vision and guidance, this project might never have gotten off the ground.” With the help of the IDA, Grumman Studios was able to find favorable financing to purchase a 29-acre parcel of land, renovate the existing 660,000 sq. ft. building (now the largest unobstructed studio in the Metropolitan area), and acquire and install the necessary machinery, fixtures and equipment to make the transition from manufacturer of aircraft to the craft of film making. Add to that sales and property tax incentives, and you can sum it up in one word: Blockbuster.
