A Film and TV Production Hub with NYC Next Door

Few locales can boast pristine beaches, acres of nature preserves, historic mansions, scenic villages and quaint main streets. Nassau County contains all of these settings in just 287 square miles, with the added benefit of having New York City next door.

Filmmakers are increasingly flocking to Nassau County, which is emerging as an accessible “back-lot” location for film production due to its diversity of scenery, proximity to Manhattan, two major film studios and a growing pool of talented industry professionals. Nassau County falls within the “New York City Film Zone”, the area located in a 25-mile radius around Columbus Circle wherein all New York City-based film workers’ unions and guilds will work locally – a crucial asset that provides high quality talent at affordable rates.

New York State-approved soundstages are available at Nassau County’s two studios – Gold Coast Studios and Grumman Studios – both located at a former Grumman site in Bethpage, NY. Grumman Studios recently filmed Angelina Jolie’s Salt, while Gold Coast Studios recently filmed Man on a Ledge – set for release in 2012 – with Sam Worthington and Elizabeth Banks. Television hits such as Boardwalk Empire, 30 Rock and Gossip Girl have also filmed in Nassau County.

While the film industry in Nassau County isn’t new – scenes from classics such as The Godfather and North by Northwest were filmed locally – the growth in recent years illustrates the heightening potential for Nassau County in the industry. In order to assist the growing number of filmmakers choosing Nassau County for production, the Long Island Film & TV Foundation was created to provide assistance and grant money.
